Dimples occur naturally when a small defect in the cheek musculature occurs; the skin overlying is stuck down to underlying connective tissue and creates a dimple in the skin with smiling. The connection of smiling and dimples has become a trademark in our perception of beauty and consequently desired by those without the natural defect.
Dimples can be simulated quite easily through mesotherapy or dimple creation surgery. In the operation, a simple incision is made to the inside of the cheek and a small, absorbable suture is placed where the dimple is desired. A permanent dimple is then created from the internal (invisible) scar tissue after the suture is absorbed. Afterwards, patients often experience renewed confidence in their brightened smile.
